Stuart Lawson has owned his FC RX7 for nearly 3 years now and at the beginning of every drift season we try to arrange a time to shoot the car, however the urge to drift has always been too much for Stu.
We still get awesome drift shots but we haven’t managed to get those elusive hard parked shots!
And so Minty.Fresh can finally present to you Stuart Lawson’s awesome fire-spitting, tyre smoking MEGA Japan FC.
It all started back in mid 2010 when Stu got the car imported from the land of the rising sun, the car was awesome on the outside but the inside, not so much …. the car had some pretty serious issues with brakes and some electronic niggles which weren’t discussed prior to export (Its to be expected from Japan unfortunately).
But being a mechanic to trade Stu didn’t waste any time getting all the niggles sorted out. Once the issues were sorted the car had to hit the track ASAP! M.F were of course on hand to capture the early days of the FC’s skid career.
The car went well but Stu wanted to put his own mark on the car and decided that he would make some changes during the off season over the last few years. The first change that you will see is the retina burning yellow the car is now covered in, it makes the car easier to spot when Stu is mid train at Driftland!
He also added some aero, the REamiya rear spoiler was fresh off the boat from Japan along with the Foresight roof spoiler and Attain tail lights. They give the car that look that is soo typical of a D1 SL car, we love it!
Under the mix of BN front and Uras rear aero are some mega suspension upgrades, HKS Hiper Max coils are joined by a host of Super Now! goodies and one-off modified knuckles, this makes the car super adjustable and easy to set up for the various tracks in the UK Stu plans to drift at with his BDC licence.
Being a drift car the wheels don’t always stay the same but for the shoot Stu broke out the wheels the car came on from Japan, if you need to know what they are you shouldn’t really be here lol, but just for reference they are Work Equips in come in 17″x 9 up front and 18″ x 10 in the rear, they give the car that bling factor!
As the Japanese would say …. “Engine Normal!” Stu has breathed on it slightly adding some induction mods, Greddy turbo back exhaust and Apexi Power FC. Boost control is taken care of by a Greddy boost controller, a Koyo rad keeps the 13b cool when sideways. But keeping the engine relatively standard has meant that the engine will take a serious beating and so far (touch wood) the car has lasted 2 solid season of abuse without missing a beat.
The interior of the car is where Stu has spent more of his time in the last few months. Being a BDC licence holder has meant the car has had to take on a few more of the safety items that the BDC stipify to compete. The most major part was the full custom cage install by AMK Garage in West Calder, door bars are a must in BDC and quite rightly so. The Sparco seats were carried over from last year but the 6 point Ksport harnesses have been added.
Electrical cut off switches have been added to the centre console along with toggle switches for the headlights. A Driftworks hyd handbrake with custom Chizfab lever helps the rear wheels lock up for initiation.
Stu also added some class to the interior in the shape of a Hitman see thru steering wheel, dildo gear knob and what can only be classed as the most Japan thing I have seen outside of Japan …… Zebra print door cards!
And so with us heading into winter/offseason its time for Stu to get back in the garage and work on some additions for next season and hopefully some BDC rounds aswell as multiple days at Driftland.
It feels awesome to finally bring you this car, as we have always loved it and we can now tick it off the list as one that didn’t get away. Don’t worry though we will be back out next year to bring you all the additions that have been added over winter and hey you never know we may even get a chance to shoot it again!!
But I will leave you with a picture that sums up this car perfectly, sideways, smoke and flames!
Stu would like to thank the following people, without them the car wouldn’t be what it is……..
Ashley Lawson, CMB autos, Fred developments, CARS recovery and everyone at Chizfab.
