The Toyota Supra has always been labeled as “Japans Muscle Car”, a car to rival those lardy yank tanks that come out of the USA. Kieran Sweeney is one Supra owner who wants to shake the “muscle car” title and make his Supra a full on touge tamer.
The car in the pictures throughout this feature is the result of years of trying out different parts and listening to his fellow Supra owners who have helped Kieran to develop the car into a sleeker, tighter version of the Supra that left the production line in Japan
This ain’t no stanced out car either, its built to be driven
Kieran started with a standard 1997 gunmetal grey Toyota Supra. With most Supra’s they are held back quite a lot by the factory to comply with the strict Japanese emission laws, so Kieran knew a BPU (basic performance upgrade) was the best way to unlock the held back horses.
The standard decat, filter and exhaust set up was thrown onto the car. The apexi filter upfront creates a nice sound on boost and the HKS exhaust pushes out the awesome straight six howl when on full throttle. The boost was raised to around 1.2bar, the outcome is a manly 400bhp.
A recent addition or should I say reduction to the engine bay is the wire tuck, it gives the bay an awesome look especially with all the chrome parts Kieran has fitted, the battery was also relocated to the boot to give even more space in the bay. A carbon rocker cover also gets thrown into the mix.
With the extra power Kieran knew he would need to stiffen up the chassis, a TRD strut bar tightens up the front and a 6 point dash dodger cage stiffens up the cabin aswell as protecting Kieran if the worst should happen. Suspension duties are taken care of by BC br coilovers, the car could go lower but Kieran wants to keep the car drivable and the Scottish roads aren’t so kind to the underside of your car lol.
Braking is taken care of by the “Mega Monster” Hi Spec 6 pot caliper’s up front and UK spec rear brakes with grooved disc’s all round
The interior has a less is more attitude, you wont find any JDM cupholders in here, but you will find only the necessary gauges and controllers.
Evo 5 seats on Bride rails along with custom 4″ harnesses keep Kieran strapped in snug when bashing the back roads.
A Blitz boost gauge and AEM afr gauge lets him keep an eye on the important things while in the car, a Greddy profec b handles the boost control and the dash is flocked not only to reduce glare but to also look ballin!
Exterior wise the car remains fairly standard, a front splitter was added, along with a Autoshine diffuser on the rear.
The main addition to the exterior have been Kieran’s wheels, he now rocks Rota Grids in a black chrome finish.
He went for 18″ by 9.5″ up front and 18″ by 10.5″ on the back, they give the car a bigger contact patch with the road which is super important when racing round the back roads.
With the modifications carried out Kieran has managed to turn the his “Japanese Muscle Car” into a Scottish touge basher, so watch your back the next time you see a grey Supra in your rear view mirror cos it might not just by any old Supra, it could be a touge warrior!
